ARC - Automated Rubbish Compactor

Simple machine that helps to break down cardboard into recycling bins

Project Outline

This was the final semestral project and was the first group project that involved coming up with a solution to improve recycling bins in Singapore. We realized that sometimes people don't break down cardboard and simply leave them on the side of recycling bins, whenever it rains or water is splashed onto the cardboard, it makes the cardboard unrecyclable, so thus we have to find a solution for that.

Difficulties

There were many existing solutions in the market but they were all either for industrial use or for home use so we had to find a way to innovate a mixture of both. It was also a challenge as my groupmates and I had different schedules and had to workaround that to find time to discuss and work on the project.

Project Reflection

We had to find a way to make recycling easier and the first step was to help break down cardboard boxes into a even smaller form as these take up the most space in recycling bins. Taking inspiration from the movie Wall-E, we decided to go with an idea that turned the cardboard or recyclables into the form of cuboids as that way they take up less space in the recycling bins.
